Having fun, but I see a point that was made to me

I'm really loving this. Still trying to learn JOSM, and am making progress in that regard, but still mostly using ID.

When I requested a country, I requested a fairly large one. An admin talked me out of it, and I can see his point. With all of the editing and re-editing I have done, working in a much larger area would have driven me nuts.

Anyway, come visit Quebertia. It's very much a work in progress (as are all nations, I guess)

What is the GSF about?

The GSF is an allusion to the Eurovision Song Contest, which should at least be familiar to all Europeans. Basically, it's a competition to showcase your country's artists. Of course, the contest also has a winner, which is determined by televoting (in our case by random principle) . Every country gives between 12 to 1 points to their favourite song. Obviously, the country with the most points wins.

Why do we need the GSF?

Browsing through the wiki you can find tons of sports-related competitions but nothing focusing on culture, let alone music. I think the GSF is a fun way to introduce something new to this platform.

How do I apply?

You can apply by commenting the following:

  • Country representing
  • Artist/Band/...
  • Song title
  • Genre
  • Language sang in

An example:

  • ABC-Country
  • Best Band Ever
  • Best Song Ever
  • Pop-Rock
  • Ingerish

When and where will the contest be held?

As you can read on the poster, the competition will be in Künsmen, Elhádhon - to be precise the newly built Konsertiihall Künsmen The winner of this contest will have the privilege to host the next one. Simulation wise I'll use this Wikipage to run the contest. There isn't an exact date yet, but I've planned something around October (Let's see how the application process develops)

Final Words

Thank you for your interest and as always, I'm open for constructive criticism and hope we'll have a fun GSF!

¡Tárrases!

Tárrases is open for business!

The tiny city-state, in an ambiguous relationship with its giant, undemocratic neighbor Mahhal, has a history of laissez-faire capitalism and open borders. Because of this, it is a popular place for international brands seeking to get a foothold in Mahhal, and in any event there are almost no barriers to entry to the small domestic market for any international brand, manufacturer, franchise or retail chain.

The country's surprisingly well-educated, cosmopolitan workforce typically receives below-market wages due to the country's isolated location, uncertain political future, and cold, damp antarctic climate, with 20-hour-long winter nights. This is a capitalist paradise!

Luciano_Screenshot_DT_Landcover_Complete.png

OOC

I have completed my landuse and landcover relations for Tárrases, and so I'm ready to get down to the business of business.

If you want to place your retail or manufacturing business in Tárrases, here's how to do it. I want to make it easy.

  • 1) One-time application, on a "per user" basis rather than on a "per-business" basis. Essentially, I will approve you as a user and then trust you to place whatever you wish in the country. That said, if you place something without prior permission, it will be removed and I'll be less likely to approve you in the future.
  • 2) Please place businesses logically. The ENTIRE COUNTRY is now "zoned". Retail businesses should be in commercially-zoned areas (landuse=commercial), although small retail chains like petrol stations, restaurants or convenience stores may be placed in residentially-zoned areas (landuse=residential); manufacturing or trading operations (warehouses) belong in industrially-zoned areas (landuse=industrial); if the spot you want is not zoned correctly, please consult with me first
  • 3) For retail businesses of all kinds, place NODES - do not tag the buildings. Most of Tárrases is very high density, and most businesses share buildings with other businesses or apartments - even the little convenience store on the corner has an apartment on the second floor - so tagging the building doesn't make sense
  • 4) For insdustrial operations, create a multipolygon relation, tagged man_made=works or other appropriate tag, around the building(s) and parking areas surrounding. However, if you're not comfortable working with relations, go ahead and place a node in a central location to your business complex, and I'll build the relation later.
  • 5) You may "share" existing buildings (best idea) or make new ones as long as they fit with the character of their area.
  • 6) Pay attention to the topography of an area when placing new buildings (see the TopoMap). Tárrases is VERY mountainous, and flat land is hard to find in some neighborhoods. Therefore do not make new roads (even service roads).
  • 7) There are no rules about language - I want the country to have a cosmopolitan feel, so the more languages on businesses and signs, the better.
  • 8) Save edits frequently and work in small areas (in e.g. JOSM), since this new approach will mean we'll all be overlapping some in our edits.
  • 9) If you add multiple locations of a single brand, please add the business name to my work-in-progress business names listing.

If you're interested in placing businesses in Tárrases, send me a message

Currently I use a self-made template to link map positions in wiki-articles.

The following options are available:

{{MER-coordinates ... name of template

| name = ... displayed name

| logo = ... displayed logo (link to file) or "no", if no logo

| zoom = | latitude = | longitude = ... coordinates and zoom

| node = ... or node number

}}

Is it also useful for your articles?

Advice about railways

$

As railways are not a usual thing to me (there is VLT in Rio de Janeiro city since this year, but I did not go there yet), I have some doubts about using this tag in my maps.

I am imagining a rail route between Slovech - or Trindade - and Tarugo or Nova Baltimore. Because Slovech is the capital, and Tarugo I will build some important naval and heavy industries. If I create this route, it can be extended to Nova Baltimore, capital of province, just few kilometeres south to Tarugo.

First doubt: Could I use railway=light_rail?? I read in OSM Wiki light rail is a urban trnasport... this way, it would not be the best railway between these cities...

Second doubt: The terminus in Slovech area.

  • can be in Trindade, a town I will re-map when I finish detailing Slovech. I prefer this idea, but "the passengers" would need to use another transportation (tram and buses) to follow to Slovech

  • can be in Sant Theo, east Slovech. In fact, here there is integration to other transportations, as buses and trams, and here is some kind of "metropolitan terminus" - the bus routes from Trindade will stop here, only one or two will follow to Slovech downtown.

*can be in Slovech downtown... only if I can use tunnels, because seting so many buildings in Slovech, there is no space to new rail stations. Which railway= I can use with tunnels??

For now I am still with a lot of work to do in Slovech detailings, but, as I am also focused about creating correct relations to all my transport routes, I need to think about it too...

Geofictional Algorithms

A somewhat different topic than usual.

If anyone is looking for mapping inspiration, or just out of curiosity, there is a twitter account called @unchartedatlas. It is a "bot" which produces imaginary maps "randomly" - obviously the design of the algorithm is probably pretty complex - the creator discusses it here. Some of the maps aren't very realistic, but others are remarkable.

International (non-sporting) competitions

Following up hmniak's diary entry about 'Geovision', I saw a comment that there aren't any other international competitions, other than sporting ones.

In fact there are a few:

The Martanidia Prizes are international prizes in Science, Medicine, Literature and Peace - equivalents of the Nobel Prizes.

The Jko Prize is an international art prize - equivalent of the Turner Prize, but extended internationally.

There is also the Cruz y Lopez prize, a prize for architecture.

Maybe there are others...

What language for Ventria?

$
0
0

Ventria (Wiki and map) is a small land-locked state that I recently "cut out" of Estiansian territory and turned to a separate state.

In Tarott (Wiki and map - bad mapping quality due to old vector imports), Kalm, there is a large Ventrian community and also a "Ventrian quarter" (Ventrisches Viertel) that has its own S-Bahn (suburban rail) station. Tarott was designed before OGF started and I came up with some cultures surrounding Kalm. And now I found a place for the Ventrians.

But: I haven't any names yet for cities and other geographical features - and I didn't decide what official language Ventria has.

So my question is now: What language for Ventria? What is your opinion?

It is surrounded by many Ulethan ("European") languages, Kalmish (German), Estiensian (Hungarian), Garlish (Romanian) a bit further away, Franquese and Vinnish in Vinnmark, Welsich (a bit like Dutch?) - there are many more, as you know can find out using the map.

I'm open for any language, but probably a Ulethan ("European") one would be great. Of course, a fantasy language "between" other European languages could also be nice. Or Ventria could have an official language that is spoken in Europe but not the "main official" language of any country.

I'm looking forward to your suggestions.

Happy mapping!

Popstar Factory and Concert for Commonia

$

Inspired by the Geovision Song Festival 2016 and my Wiwaxian contestant Sibyl, I've written wikipedia articles on two vaguely related things:

  • A global TV show called Popstar Factory with contestants competing to become popstars and various country editions. Feel free to add your own country's version of the show or let me know here and I'll add it myself! Also, I didn't write which country originated the show. Wiwaxia I feel is too small and insignificant a country to have started it - any other bigger and more culturally dominant countries with major TV production companies (that have wiki articles about them!) interested in being the originator in 2002?

  • An aid event called Concert for Commonia with aid going to displaced Commonians. Feel free to add singers and pop stars from your country to the list (and expand on the article if you want) or let me know here and I'll add it myself.

INTRODUCING THE KOOPER NETWORK - REAL INTERNET FOR OGF

Not long ago, I read an entry about websites in OGF. That gave me an idea.: Why not making them real?

KOOPER.TK

I remembered I have an un-used website, it's called Kooper.tk , and I tried to make a social network there. We can use it to make real websites with OGF-related content. We can make functional websites or just plain landing pages looking like real websites.

Why?

Just for fun. I don't think why someone would like to read a website about how great life in Kalm is or one about how to move to Ostermark, but it can be pretty exciting to build a life-like website about your country, with even your own country domain.

Your own country domain

An OGF website address would look like "http://kooper.tk/livinginvinnmark" , but you can link to it as livinginvinnmark.vk.

Is it a good idea? Would you collaborate?

Comment below, please.

Another extra entry: about OGF social networking also.

I've not editing so much since... uhmm... I really don't know. I updated JOSM, and proably that fixed some problems with OGF editing. Sincerelly I don't like Potlatch2 (where is the scale rule in that app?). And also I edited the OGF Wiki.

I've been updating the coastline of Aŭstrasuno Tero, principally in Malvarma Rokoj, were I created a strange and weird geography. I like it too much: islands, islands, islets... and more islands with a sharp and broken coastlines.

By the way, is OGF in social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Reditt or Tumblr?

City finally taking shape

Yay! My South Bay City is finally starting to take shape in a form I'm (so far) happy with.

A problem I have is that seeing as I live in the second flattest state in the US, I tend to think more in terms of a central grid system, and not with spurs and winding strrets. As my city's metro area expands to the north, however, it will but up against some foothills, and non-straight roads will be a thing here.

Can someone give me some ideas/feedback/tips on my coastline so far?

Hi there! New member here, I just claimed by first territory a few days ago and intend to build it into a big single-party communist state called the People's Republic of Turonia, because we don't seem to have very many around at the moment.

So logically I'm doing the natural features first, mainly the coastline. I absolutely butchered the scaling the first time (I had a building over 5km long...) but I redid my coast and I was wondering if anyone knowledgeable or experienced could give me some feedback on it. The country is labelled as Turonia and it's on the eastern coast of Tarephila.

My inspiration is Eastern Canada, with my own sort of spin on it. I have several large "Great Lakes" some distance from the coast as well as a large river inspired by the St. Lawrence. The capital city is going to be situated in the bay near the centre and spread across the islands situated within it. That idea was inspired by Montreal, but on a much larger scale and in a bay.

ANYWAYS that's about it. Is there any advice you can offer me in improving my coastline? I want to have details like rivers and lakes ideally, since it makes for interesting city locations and designs.

Any Climatologists?

$

I have been working towards creating a ground cover/biome map, and my first step has been to try to calculate yearly average temperatures. Below is my first attempt, using only latitude and elevation as inputs. I used some of the information here for determining starting temperature values, which I updated with a temperature loss of .0064℃ per meter of elevation.

The next step is to determine moisture levels, which combined with temperature will allow me to calculate likely biomes. My current plan is to guess general air currents, and then simulate air picking up water over the ocean, and then adding or losing water as the air moves up and down hills and mountains.

Can anyone suggest a better (or easier) method? Or have any ideas on determining likely air currents?

I have become very aware at how complex climate is, and that I am unlikely to accurately model it, but I would like to get as close to realistic as possible.

Any thoughts, direction or advice would be appreciated.

Feedback on first wiki article for Tengappei

$

Hello, I am a new user who has just started developing my country of Tengappei in central Antarephia. I'm currently just doing the coastline, major rivers and geographical features.

I've just completed the start to the wiki article and I would like your help to check over my stats, especially language. My current plan is to have a Japanese-English mix because I am half Japanese, half English (but I can't really write in Japanese). After some research, I decided Nihonish is probably the correct language, and it is the same as the nearby country Paxtar. However, I'm not sure what the nearby countries 'Heben', 'Hidara', and 'Koberro' languages are (especially Koberro with that really long name). I've even asked by fluent Japanese sister to help and she couldn't work it out.

Another question I have is the colonial history of Antarephia. Which countries have said they were colonized? I understand that it is my own choice but I would like to base it off the surroundings and the information on the wiki wasn't very detailed. Any other feedback, such as on my coastlines or climate, is welcome. With climate, countries nearby, like Koberro, are marked as a cold climate, despite my own research which suggested countries near me should have a fairly warm, Mediterranean perhaps, climate with very little snow. Thank you.

EDIT: I just realized the post below me was on climate by nearby country Paxtar, who gave it a lower climate that I did. My country is on a warmer ocean current but I should probably lower the temperature a bit (or possibly Paxtar raise the temperature a bit- real life equivalents have average temperature of 20C).
