Multinational chains

Hello chaps,

Is their a list of multinational food and other business chains that has been put together for OGF? I'm thinking we need the following:

  • Burger and other fast food chains (i.e KFC, McDonalds)
  • Oil companies (BP, Shell, etc)
  • Parcel and couriers (UPS, FedEx)
  • err.... other stuff?!

It's been around a month since I started mapping my country, and I am pleased with some sections and also have a few questions.

My first, and most urgent, question is, why can I only download tiny sections? When I try to download anything onto JOSM larger than 5*5km, it returns an error 'IO exception... Details (untranslate): read timed out'. It's really making mapping impossible because it also happens just before uploading when it is updating the map segments.

My second question is, how do I prevent other people editing my country? Another person is adding roads in the corner of my country, near New Denton, which, while on its own is fine, is moving my main motorways around.

My third question is, how do you prevent conflicts occurring in JOSM? This is probably related to the two above problems but still confuses me a lot. Often, it says there are conflicts in the administrative Region 'Ovaria' (the old name) which I really don't understand.

The final (I think...) question is, how do you get public transport routes to appear on the map? In the September challenge, the hyperlink links to a specific route. I have made a public transport legacy route relation, how do I select it in opengeofiction?

Other than that, making steady progress, and would welcome any feedback.

I'm very new to this community but find this very enjoyable and the amount of work put into the maps are incredible. But I have no idea how to name cities. If anyone can help it would be very appreciated

Abrilleron and Massentia

This post is ten months late.

On New Years of 2016, I received my first bit of territory on OpenGeofiction. I started work, but I quickly hit a roadblock. I was having more ideas for my territory than I could map while simultaneously having no "vision" as to how the country was going to be like at the end and progress was going really slowly because I wanted to use JOSM (two hours wasted raging at the relation editor, or lack thereof, on New Years!). Couple that with an absolute lack of neighbors and the fact I was using an invented language and you pretty much have a recipe for disaster (at least I didn't break Antarephia's coastline). This meant that after just one month of editing I decided to look for a better place to place my country in and after searching a bit I found my spot - not too far from my old location, actually - on an island off the coast of southern Tarephia, which is where (aside from occasional forays into Gobrassanya) my edits have been concentrated ever since. With the little space I had, I had to think very creatively to put everything where it needs to be.

After a few weeks I got a neighbor, refried sushi, who eventually proposed a short history of the region that our nations (and a bunch of others') are located in. Which means that I can now extend this history to the present day, giving me more hints to how my country was going to be like.

Breaking my arm also helped. No, I am not joking.

Abrilleron is a former Ingerish colony which was established relatively early. The Ingerish left the colony alone in the early 18th century hover. Abrilleron then promptly joined the Ardoin Trade League (see above). Following its collapse in 1880, Abrilleron descended into a civil war that ended in 1905, marking the day of the creation of today's republic.

Anyways, there is a second nation next to mine - Massentia, my own country and a microstate primarily focused on agriculture, created after 1905. This country is still a monarchy, and proud of its past, though it will never go back to its beginnings, which it claims were the first independent Abrilleran state, a kingdom.

This is where most of my edits were in the last few days and I have to say that it already looks quite good. Take a look.

Other areas I have focused on are Akesia (and surroundings), the capital of Abrilleron, Borders City, where the bridge across to Mallorjhe is located, and Noian-Piruna in Gobrassanya.

That would be all.

Firstly I gave Flyht Myrcia (Myrcia's major airline) a brand refresh last night and designed a nice boarding pass (aided by the fictional OGF universe where airlines aren't stuck with 20 year old printers!). So please take a look and let me know what you think.

If your country is in Uletha or Tarephia then I'd like to establish an air route from Dunwic Flyhthæfen International. Just reply to this post or send me a message. Also happy for reciprocal flights or codeshare agreements to be established with your airlines.

I know this won't be everyone's cup of tea but I am really interested in urban design and national branding so I have set up some Pinterest boards where I'm collecting images that I feel are typical of life in Myrcia and of the city of Dunwic.

I love the freedom that OGF gives me to bring together my favourite parts of European countries and try to develop a modern country known for its design culture, high quality urban design and exemplary modern architecture. Let me know what you think.

GREAT VINNMARK- Possible history?

Greetings. I've been thinking about some stuff about Vinnmark's history I'd like to share with you. During the 14th century, Vinnmark experienced its 'Golden age' and its territory occupied the now called: Clethmor (Klaitmör) Southclist (Söedige), Lanland (Lånland), Colensy (Klensk) in Wesmandy; Ventria ; Welstand-Westrijk; Shilesia (Sålskat); that big unnamed territory next to Vinnmark and some small parts of Esthensia. These regions later claimed Independence or were invaded by the countries they now belong to, but may still have some little Vinnish-speaking minorities. As you may know, the Vinnish far-right leader Blauer who invaded several countries, actually wanted to re-conquer the old Great Vinnmark.

What do you think? This is a map of how that Great Vinnmark looked like : Map

GIF malfunction on OGF wiki

For some reason a gif I uploaded does not render on OGF. The file can be accessed perfectly well and the full picture can be used on my wiki page about the Agarderia-Karamsk War. However, if I make the picture any smaller, an error message pops up, as shown here. A slightly different error message appears for the actual image, which is here. I uploaded it again as 'Agarderia War', yet the same message appears.

Does anybody know what is wrong with the file and what can be done to solve it?

Transcommonian Colony in Gobrassanya

User Stjur created a new District in Gobrassanya: Barodyne District as a colony of Commonia, as taken from the district name. As it is a quite radical change for the history/landscape of Gobrassanya and took some already existing cities to be rebuilt, I'd like to discuss the changes. I am fine with creating new ideas, but I am not happy about creating such a radical change without contacting the community about the influences, etc.

Please have in mind that cooperation has to be the highest value of each participant.

I am fine with the creation of a local independant "Sprachraum" and maybe also small varieties in culture, but greater things have to be discussed.

This diary isn't meant to be offensive, it should just clarify the importance of cooperation.

Luciano's Mapper's Challenge #7 - October, 2016 - COUNTRY ROADS

I actually gave up on my own last challenge, #6, after about a week. I completely quit, and decided not to do it.

I had several reasons.

  • I've been really busy outside of OGF, which prevented me from focusing on the project. I still wanted to spend some of my free time editing, but I wanted to be more "free" to just do what occurred to me, and I felt constrained by my own project.
  • I decided I wasn't ready to make bus routes for Tárrases, because I want the bus routes to follow where people live, so I want to be closer to finished on where the inhabited areas and neighborhoods are first
  • I also wasn't ready technically, because I wanted to be able to make a nice multimaps bus-routes map, and I wasn't ready to do the work to get my scripts working on my new Linux system

Anyway, I know several other users made great and interesting progress on this "public transport" challenge. I've seen some great work on the map and in the wiki. Post your results here or with your own diary entry or in the wiki.

Luciano's Mapper's Challenge #7 - October, 2016 - COUNTRY ROADS

It took me a while to decide what kind of challenge to make next. I always want to make a challenge that is something I want to work on too - even if I end up giving up on it, as happened last month.

I asked some other people for some brainstorms for good challenges, and this new challenge is one suggested by Thilo.

The main point is, most of us here at OGF are very focused on cities. So the idea, this month, is to avoid city work, and focus on countryside, villages, hamlets, and small towns.

In fact, I've already been doing this challenge a lot - a great deal of work in Ardisphere is countryside and small towns, and Tárrases too. But this month, I want to focus even more.

There are areas of OSM that are so well mapped, each farm has a name and every building in the rural area is mapped. Northern Spain's Basque Country is a favorite example of mine - I'm sure there are many others.

  • Advanced challenge: choose an area and map not just landuse but every single road, track, path, fence, tree row and building in the countryside. Try to include the livestock, too, if you can get them to stand still (but how should they be tagged?).
  • Easier challenge: choose an area and map full coverage for landuses and focus on country roads (i.e. no motorways, trunks, primaries, etc.).

I will be doing the advanced challenge in the rural parts of Tárrases, while also continuing to fill out the urban areas. I have already done landuses, but I need to refine detail, and I very much need to add many more country roads (really, in Tárrases, these are mountain tracks, since the island is very mountainous). Adding roads in Tárrases is fun but also a lot of work, because my goal is to make the roads "topographically realistic." The results are fantastic, however, especially in the Topo Layer. I want to cover the island in one-lane mountain tracks, paths, hiking trails and livestock runs. These are often quite dense in the real world, even where population density is low - take a look at the trail density in this area in Greece.

Happy mapping and enjoy your northern hemisphere autumn / southern hemisphere spring.

Malaperis, Quebertia - opinions?

I'd like opinions of my City Malaperis. I'm pretty much using iD and Potlatch at this point, as the PC I use, due to administrative issues, won't let me install anything, let alone JOSM

Again, an issue I run into is the grid system city, as I live in the second flattest state in the US, and that's pretty much everything out here, but I am trying to shake things up a bit.

As with everything, work in progress

I was getting a little overwhelmed seeing some of the featured maps in the wiki, but I understand that it takes time to get there.

Geolliance

Following up on Adam's discussion below about Flyht Myrcia, I've created an code-sharing airline alliance, Geolliance. The wiki page is pretty thin, but there's space to add airlines and hubs there (no table yet, but that can be added once airlines join). And I'd love to have at least one or two other airlines to join Air Wiwaxia as founders as well. The alliance particularly needs airlines that fly more outside Eastern Uletha, i.e. Archanta, Tarephia and Antarephia, as well as Western Uletha.

As discussed earlier, there might be other alliances created with Air Ataraxie as a founder of one and KojAir as founder of another, so if you already have code-sharing deals with either of them you probably don't want to be part of this alliance.

Yesterday, October 6th, 2016, I began the major roads of a new city along the west coast of Manohtodtt, Commonia. I was just getting the feel for how the mapping program works.

I decided on the name Jameʃtown, using the "long S" however, this may change.

I've not been very active here recently, as real life events have intruded into the fictional world of OGF. However, I haven't forgotten about the project, and as such I'd like to show you all a little item I made on my new 3D printer. It's a siikesilla, which are the traditional pendants worn by Karolians:

http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/File:Siikesilla_author.jpg

This is 3d printed in PLA and painted using a charcoal paint, which over orange plastic gives a pleasing bronze effect. I intend to start a side business selling this and similar designs on a marketplace site like Etsy.
